Without a doubt, the South of France is one of the most beautiful regions anywhere in the world. From the vineyards, to the coast, to the food and the medieval past, this region has it all and offers an endless amount of small towns and villages that are worth your time. My personal favorite is Languedoc-Roussillon’s seaside town of Collioure.
Only a half hour’s drive from Perpignan (or two hours from Barcelona) Collioure France sits so close to the Spanish border that if you miss the exit (as we did) you’ll end up in Spain by accident! Coming from Spain you take exit 43 for Le Boulou and it’s a short distance to Angeles-sur-Mer and then just slightly further on to Collioure.
There isn’t a ton to do in Collioure, and that’s the beauty of the place. Grab a seat at one of the outdoor restaurants overlooking the Mediterranean and order the mussels with a nice rose. Over your shoulder you’ll be able to see the vineyards that grew the rose, and out in the Mediterranean you’ll see where the mussels came from.
Besides food and wine the Royal Castle of Collioure is a must-visit. From its catacombs to its ramparts to its stunning view over the sea and town, you’ll feel like you’re in a medieval fairy-tale.
If you’re looking for a spot in the South of France that’s not overrun by tourist and still has an extremely authentic, old world feel to it, you have to check out Collioure. When you do be sure to let me know, I’d love to see the photos.
